Liquor law violations on campus need be an issue taken care of by Public Safety, not by the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office.
When students get into trouble on campus for drinking or possessing alcohol, it is always hit-or-miss as to whether or not the offender(s) is going to get into legal trouble, or just trouble with the campus security.
When there is a sheriff on campus, students caught violating liquor laws are likely to receive a ticket for drinking that is issued by the sheriff.
There have been other instances, however, where students who have violated liquor laws have only had a conduct meeting and were required to take a class that was provided by the university.
If students are going to get into trouble on campus, it should be an equal punishment by the same enforcers.
It is not fair that some students get into real legal trouble while others only get in trouble with on-campus security officers.
The university needs to pick one or the other because consequences that vary are unjust.
